ABOUT INDONESIA

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country comprising over 17,000 islands stretching over 5,000 km from the East to West and 1,700 km from North to South along the equator. To put it in a perspective, from East to West, Indonesia extends longer that the distance from Los Angeles to New York.

Sprawled over 5 million square kilometers, Indonesia consists of 84 percent water and only 16 percent land. Its five main islands –Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Papua, are only a select few among over 17,000 other islands in the territory; all bearing their own unique geological and cultural quirks. The 81,000 km coastline offers many stunning beaches with various sand colors and coral reefs.

Timezones

Indonesia has three time zones—Western Indonesia Time which is GMT +7 (covering Sumatra, Java, Madura, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan), Central Indonesia Time which is GMT +8 (covering East and South Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara), and the last is Eastern Indonesia Time which is GMT +9 (covering Maluku and Irian Jaya). The capital Jakarta is GMT + 7 or 16 hours ahead of US Pacific Standard Time.

Office Hours

Office hours start from 8 AM to 4 PM, or 9 AM to 5 PM. The lunch break occurs between 12 noon to 1 PM. Usually, offices are closed on Saturdays, including government offices. Government office hours start at 8 AM and end at 4 PM.

Banking Hours

Standard banking hours are from 8 AM to 3 PM from Monday to Friday. However, several banks open their branches in hotels (and some in malls) longer than office hours, a few are open on Saturdays so you might want to check first. Jakarta has a number of international banks, even though you can also exchange currencies in some hotel cashiers and official money changers.

Currency

The Indonesia Rupiah is also called IDR. Information on the daily exchange rate can be found in newspapers or from the net. Some Indonesian banks provide this on their websites. IDR and US$ are the most acceptable currencies. Most tourism resorts have money changer facilities. When you are traveling to remote areas it is advisable to exchange your money and clear your check. Credit cards are only acceptable in big hotels, restaurants, shops, and traveling agencies.

Electricity

The electric power supply is 220 volts in all regions. So be careful with your 110-volt electronic equipment. The sockets will only fit with two pins rounded-tip plugs (technically known as Type C, E, and F) or use adaptors. Most hotels and many restaurants in large cities provide internet connections or free WiFi.

ABOUT JAKARTA

Jakarta, officially the Special Capital Region of Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Located on the northwest coast of the world’s most populous island Java, it is the center of economics, culture, and politics of Indonesia. Jakarta has five administrative cities which consist of Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Jakarta, and East Jakarta.

Climate

Jakarta has a tropical monsoon climate (Am) according to the Köppen climate classification system. The wet season in Jakarta covers the majority of the year, running from October through May. The remaining four months (June through September) constitute the city’s drier season (each of these 4 months has an average monthly rainfall of less than 100 millimeters (3.9 in)). Located in the western part of Java, Jakarta’s wet season rainfall peak is January and February with an average monthly rainfall of 299.7 millimeters (11.80 in), and its dry season low point is August with a monthly average of 43.2 mm (1.70 in).
